ICYMI: Michigan Business Leaders Urge Congressional Delegation to “Do the Right Thing” and Protect Clean Energy Investments

“Our congressional delegation has a choice. They can defend these
investments—or they can jeopardize Michigan’s momentum just as
it’s gaining speed.”

Today, the Michigan Energy Innovation Council (Michigan EIBC) hosted a
virtual press conference with four local business leaders who sounded
the alarm on House Republicans’ sweeping tax proposal. If enacted,
their proposal would effectively repeal most of the federal incentives
driving advanced energy manufacturing, clean energy deployment, and
electric vehicle growth in Michigan and nationwide.

Leaders from Walker-Miller Energy Services, Michigan Solar
Solutions, Advanced Battery Concepts, and Michigan CAT underscored
how the Inflation Reduction Act’s (IRA) energy and manufacturing
tax credits are already delivering for Michigan—creating
jobs, driving down energy costs, and sparking new investment
across the state. Just this week, Michigan EIBC released a
[report](https://www.mieibc.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Auto-Leadersh
ip-and-the-Michigan-Economy_MIEIBC.pdf) highlighting the automotive
industry's central role in Michigan’s economy and emphasizing the
need for continued federal and state support to keep U.S. automakers
competitive in the global market against Chinese manufacturers.

The leaders called on Michigan’s congressional delegation to stand
up for the state’s economic future. They pointed to the expanded
manufacturing, workforce gains, and energy growth already underway as
clear evidence that federal incentives are working exactly as intended.
Repealing them would do real harm—jeopardizing thousands of jobs and
millions in investments, just as momentum is building. Michigan’s
business leaders made one thing clear: They are united in their support
for keeping these incentives in place. As Congress moves forward
with this bill, Michigan’s delegation faces a choice: Protect the
state’s progress or turn their backs on one of its biggest economic
opportunities.

You can watch a recording of the full event
here
or read excerpts from participants below:

“It’s critical that Michigan’s congressional delegation—on both
sides of the aisle—stand up and defend the energy and manufacturing
tax credits that are already delivering for our state. These investments
are creating jobs, building new manufacturing capacity, and helping
businesses compete and grow,” said Michigan Energy Innovation
Business Council President Dr. Laura Sherman. “Defending these
credits isn’t about politics—it’s about protecting Michigan’s
economic future. Every Michigander deserves the opportunity to thrive in
an affordable, reliable, and prosperous economy. And that means we need
to keep smart, proven federal investments in place.”

“Advanced Battery Concepts is the classic American entrepreneurial
story. It started in my garage with my 401(k) and my lovely wife
supporting me the whole way. And through time, we took a technology and
an idea and built a company,” said Advanced Battery Concepts CEO
& Founder Dr. Edward Shaffer. “These manufacturing credits—and
I'm speaking to our congressional staff to be very clear—help us level
the playing field with countries like China so we can grow manufacturing
and good-paying jobs here in Michigan. We fully support our Michigan
Congressional delegation of both parties to do the right thing and
continue the energy tax credits so companies like Advanced Battery
Concepts can grow meaningful solutions and jobs and ensure American
energy independence.”

“The clean energy sector has been a powerful engine for job creation
in Michigan. But with fewer incentives, we will see a slowdown in
hiring, shrinking training programs, and growing uncertainty for
businesses that have invested in clean energy manufacturing,” said
Walker-Miller Energy Services Vice President of Electrification and
Mobility Komal Doshi***.*** “We urge policymakers to consider the
real-world impacts of these decisions. Not just on businesses like
ours, but on the families and communities who rely on affordable, clean
energy solutions. The broader economic implications are clear: higher
costs for both businesses and residents, potential disruptions in clean
tech supply chains, and a risk to Michigan’s competitiveness in the
national clean energy market.”

“As a conservative person myself, I can tell you for sure that
the tax credits we've received and our customers have received are
not boondoggles. These are critical to our communities, not just
some rich person's dream. These are real projects—real jobs in
Michigan,” said Michigan CAT Advanced Energy Systems Manager
Kevin O’Connell. “They're real and have a real impact on these
projects and how fast they go to market.”

“Rolling back these federal incentives would mean fewer customers
for us and for other businesses in the clean energy space. People would
lose out on savings. They’d miss the opportunity to protect themselves
with battery backup during outages. And many projects—both residential
and commercial—would likely be delayed or canceled. That means slower
growth, reduced hiring, and a loss of confidence in our state’s clean
energy future,” said Michigan Solar Solutions Vice President of
Operations John Jevahirian. “Our congressional delegation has a
choice. They can defend these investments—or they can jeopardize
Michigan’s momentum just as it’s gaining speed.”

From challenge to solution: The role of LDES in sustainable energy

The LDES Consortium
is a compelling initiative focused on advancing long-duration energy
storage (LDES) technologies to enhance grid reliability and support
the integration of renewable energy. In this interview, Dr. Alyssa
McQuilling, CBI's Research & Innovation Manager, provides insights into
the consortium's goals, the roles of its members, and the innovative
solutions to push the boundaries of energy storage.

Can you give us a brief overview of the LDES Consortium and its
primary goals?

Sure! The LDES Consortium is an exciting initiative that brings together
diverse stakeholders to tackle the challenges of long-duration energy
storage (LDES). The main aim is to overcome both technological and
economic barriers to make LDES more viable and widespread.

What makes this consortium special is that it's 'technology agnostic ',
meaning we're not biased towards any specific energy storage technology.
We have experts from different energy storage technologies, such as
chemical, mechanical, thermal, and all types of batteries, including
lead and lithium. The idea is to address every aspect of the industry,
from developing the workforce and managing the supply chain to creating
policies and advancing technology, regardless of the specific technology
used.

**What roles do you and Dr. Matt Raiford, CBI's Technical
Director,**play within the LDES Consortium, and what are the 'tiger
teams' you're involved with?

Matt and I are involved in several 'tiger teams' within the consortium.
These teams are focused groups that tackle specific challenges related
to long duration energy storage. Each team is dedicated to addressing a
unique aspect of the LDES landscape.

Between the two of us, we're active in about eight tiger teams, where we
attend meetings, provide feedback, and help refine the challenges and
recommendations alongside other industry experts.

Uniting experts for energy innovation

How does LDES differ from other types of energy storage, and why is it
important?

That's a great question. LDES stands out because it can store energy
for more than ten hours, which is crucial for ensuring the grid's
reliability. Some technologies are perfect for shorter durations,
while others can handle much longer storage times, even up to seasonal
storage.

This capability is especially important as we integrate more renewable
energy, which can be unpredictable, into the grid. In simple terms, LDES
helps balance supply and demand, ensuring enough energy is available
when it's needed the most. This makes it a key player in creating a
stable and sustainable energy system.

You're leading the Workforce Development team. What does that entail,
and why is it crucial for the project?

I'm the industry advisor for the Workforce Development team, which is
led by Hope Corsair at Oak Ridge National Lab. Our team's mission is
to determine what skills and training are needed to build a strong
workforce for the LDES industry. We've examined current workforce needs
and are making recommendations to help scale the industry and prepare
for future demands.

This builds on my previous work with the NAATBatt Education
Subcommittee, where we focused on the educational needs of the battery
industry. Ensuring we have a skilled workforce is essential for the
success of LDES technologies.

What are some of the big challenges you face in making LDES more
common, and how are you addressing them?

One of the biggest challenges we face is the cost. For instance, the
current systems are primarily designed for shorter durations, making
them less cost-effective for longer storage needs. Another challenge is
scaling up the supply chain for these newer technologies, which haven't
been widely deployed yet.

To address these, we're working on creating new market structures and
incentives for long-duration energy storage. We're also confident that
as the industry gains more experience, costs will come down, and these
technologies will become more affordable.

Can you share a success story or milestone the LDES Consortium has
achieved so far?

Absolutely! One of our early successes has been the release of initial
recommendations from our tiger teams. These drafts are currently under
review and will help guide the consortium's future activities.

We're also planning our first in-person consortium meeting in September
in California, which is expected to bring together up to 300 attendees.
It's a great opportunity to build momentum and collaboration.

Building a sustainable energy ecosystem

Sustainability and environmental impact are critical concerns. How do
these advanced energy storage solutions help create a greener and more
sustainable future?

LDES is crucial for maintaining grid reliability as we increase the
use of renewable energy sources. By storing energy for longer periods,
LDES helps balance the intermittency of resources like wind and solar.
Technologies like lead batteries provide long duration storage and have
established recycling processes, supporting a more sustainable energy
ecosystem.

What potential do LDES technologies hold for transforming the energy
landscape in developed and developing regions?

LDES has the potential to improve how we use renewable energy by making
it more reliable and accessible. It can be integrated into large
national grids as well as smaller microgrids, which are particularly
beneficial in developing regions. This flexibility can support broader
electrification and sustainable development goals globally.

Looking ahead, what impact do you think LDES will have on our everyday
lives and the global energy landscape?

I believe that LDES will become a seamless part of our power grid,
supporting decarbonization and electrification efforts. It will ensure
we have reliable power whenever it's needed, helping to make our energy
systems more resilient and sustainable.

It will be interesting to see the development of new technologies
and the lessons we can learn from existing ones to ensure that the
industry's growth is sustainable. This starts from the extraction of raw
materials, through manufacturing and the lifetime of the systems, all
the way to the end of life and recycling/materials recovery.

QUENCH EV CHARGERS AND ADVANCED BATTERY CONCEPTS ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC COLLABORATION FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV) CHARGING

Advanced Battery Concepts, LLC (ABC), a Michigan-based energy storage
technology company, and Quench EV Chargers announce a joint strategic
collaboration to provide electric vehicle (EV) owners with reliable,
fast and convenient charging, completely independent of traditional
power grids.

The collaboration between Quench and ABC is timely and vital. The U.S.
government predicts a need for 2.5 million EV charging sites by 2030.
Many sources suggest that the U.S. electrical power grid cannot support
a 28 percent annual growth rate from now to 2030.

“That’s a big concern”, says Michael Everett, ABC’s president.
“ABC’s bipolar battery-based Energy Storage System (ESS) levels
demand peaks and reduces costs to consumers in three ways. First, by
sourcing in-coming electricity during lower-cost ‘off-peak’ hours.
Second, our ESS minimizes charging station time-of-use, because direct
DC-to-DC (Direct Current) charging is faster and more efficient than
(Alternating Current) AC-to-DC charging which is the current charging
station ‘norm’. Third, there is a constant supply of energy to the
charger. Faster charging provides lower per-visit time, cost and allows
more EV’s per hour”, he added.

ABC’s ESS can receive, manage and store electric energy from every
source—power grid, wind, solar or a combination. This broad input
capability is of particular importance as concerns about the rising
demand for energy is discussed. ABC’s storage system’s versatility
is an important environmental benefit and one not missed by the Quench
team in their discussions with ABC.

At the core of this versatile system is a new and highly efficient
bipolar battery breakthrough called the “EverGreenSeal™ Battery”.
Bipolar batteries are widely respected for uniform electric current and
overall power “density”. These batteries do not “steal” lithium
resources away from the EV’s they intend to power. They don’t
use lithium. Instead, these patented and highly efficient batteries
rely on readily available, domestically-sourced materials, low-cost
manufacturing and a unique structural design that allows for total
recycling of active chemistry and battery case elements. Here again,
Quench management, which is also concerned about the global environment,
saw these factors as vital to the future of EV charging.

"We are pleased to partner with Advanced Battery Concepts to bring their
innovative energy storage solutions to our customers. This collaboration
allows us to enhance our product offerings and provide EV charging
solutions that cater to the unique needs of the U.S. market. ABC’s
ESS will help address peak draw from charging stations, reducing demand
and associated power costs for each charging location. With Quench
Chargers and ABC's advanced storage technology, customers can enjoy the
convenience of charging their electric vehicles in even the most remote
locations. This teamwork empowers every EV driver to embark on a journey
with unwavering confidence," said Bjoern Stoll, CEO, Quench EV Chargers
Americas.

About Quench Chargers:

Quench Chargers is part of a joint venture called 'Ador Digatron'
between the 115-year-old Ador Group, India, and the Digatron Group,
Germany. Ador Digatron is a technology house that provides deep
industrial power electronics design, software, and technical knowledge
for quality battery formation rectifiers, battery testing equipment,
battery charging technologies, and numerous customized battery charging

ADVANCED BATTERY CONCEPTS AND EXIDE INDUSTRIES LIMITED ANNOUNCE COMMERCIALIZATION PLAN

Advanced Battery Concepts, LLC (ABC) and Exide Industries Limited,
an Indian corporation, announced their mutual intent to develop a
commercial plan to manufacture and sell ABC’s Box-BE™ Battery Energy
Storage Systems in the Indian marketplace.

Both parties have agreed to “scope-out and define a program for
jointly commercializing the energy storage products in India”.
Under this non-binding letter of intent, ABC and Exide will jointly
work together to determine and explore the business opportunities,
applications and addressable markets exist in India for the Energy
Storage System containing the proprietary bipolar storage batteries
invented by Advanced Battery Concepts. To that end, they will agree on
the design of a commercial EverGreenSeal™ battery and the appropriate
testing of the resulting product or products. Based on successful
testing of the battery design and favorable market indicators for
investing and producing the products, further steps will emerge as a
result of this initial effort.

ABC pioneered new lead battery manufacturing technologies and
proprietary bipolar architecture to offer energy storage solutions
with superior economics compared to lithium-ion, traditional lead
batteries and other rival technologies. The company’s years of
battery developments and successful innovation has led to the invention
of EverGreenSeal™ --their breakthrough battery technology which is
supported by a broad portfolio of patents and trade secrets.

This is a battery designed from the inside-out with “End-Of-Life
re-manufacturability” as a leading objective within the design and
construction of the new EverGreenSeal batteries. This extraordinary
battery, after a long service life, is deconstructed, the primary
materials collected and using novel processes, the active materials are
efficiently recycled and built into a new EverGreenSeal battery, with
full warranty and service life. ABC has recently launched the Box-BE™
ESS product line in the U.S. – the first system to take advantage
of the numerous benefits of EverGreenSeal technology. The numerous
economic, environmental and sustainability advantages of EverGreenSeal
battery technology figured prominently in Exide Industry’s interest in
exploring manufacturing and marketing within their Indian marketplace.
Both companies have many years of mutual cooperation and look forward to
working together on this next commercial opportunity.
